The Hastings moved from Coleman, Georgia to Haven, Maine in 1956 after a "freakish series of storms" destroyed their home town.[note 1] The family was later interviewed by Dave Teagues, who wrote an article on the Hastings family that was published in the Haven Herald.[note 2]
The daughter in the Hastings family was described by Dave as a "cast-iron bitch." She married into the Caldwell family and had a daughter, Marion Caldwell. When she passed away, she left Marion two million dollars.
