"Now" is the 77th episode of Haven and the twenty fifth episode of season 5. This episode is also the first part of the show's two hour series finale.

Synopsis[]

In the face of mounting obstacles, Haven's heroes struggle to rebuild the barn. The arrival of Mara's father, Croatoan, to Haven has everyone asking questions about his real intentions. Audrey attempts to save Duke while Duke is forced to give in to his worst fear. Dwight is tempted by a surprise gift, whilst Nathan must consider a devastating sacrifice. It will be a sacrifice that will save Haven but destroy the woman he loves, once and for all. Croatoan continues to try and reason with the group, wanting them to rebuild the barn, but he has ulterior motives.

Plot[]

Audrey is back in the police station, and she tells Nathan what Croatoan told her in the yellow house - that he's going to make all of her friends happy. She says it's scarier than a real threat.

Duke tracks down Vanessa's nephew, Victor Kirby, who can also see the future and find out how a person is going to die. He wants to harvest the Trouble for Croatoan, so that he can show Audrey the future.

Dwight doesn't want to tell the others about Lizzie, his daughter, but he knows she's not real because she died years ago. He's hiding out with Vince, who has taken over Agent Howard's role as Controller of the Barn.

Audrey thinks they might be able to use Vicky's Trouble to fix the aether core because if she draws it she might be able to put it back together. Suddenly, Croatoan appears. Nathan tries to shoot at him, but all the bullets bounce off. Croatoan says he's there to talk to Nathan and he offers him a new life far away, the life he's always wanted with the woman he loves - Audrey. He shows him a second Audrey who's walking down the dock outside, but Nathan says she's just a copy and he says he won't abandon the real Audrey for an illusion.

Dwight goes outside to talk to Duke, who's still under the control of Croatoan. Duke says that Croatoan is looking for the Controller crystal and if Dwight brings it, Croatoan will let him keep Lizzie, and if he doesn't Croatoan will come for her. Dwight says he can't go through losing Lizzie again.

Vicky draws the aether core, hoping she can fix the crack by folding the page when she's finished with it. Audrey asks Nathan if he wants to accept Croatoan's offer. She thinks she should give him the chance to be happy if she really loves him. Nathan says he wouldn't even consider it. Duke comes into the police station, but everyone hides.

Dwight realizes that Lizzie has no idea she died in the past, but she retains all of her memories. Dwight tests her to see if she will bring out milk and cookies the way she used to, and she does.

In the police station, Vicky is hurrying to finish the drawing while Duke hunts for them. Duke appears before she can fix the aether core. Vicky stumbles as they're running away and Duke picks up the drawing. He tears it up and the core dissolves in Audrey's hand. Duke says that Croatoan wants Audrey and Nathan alive, and he only wants Vicky. Audrey confesses that she used Duke for his Trouble without considering how much it would hurt him. She apologizes to him and cries, and she asks Duke to think about who he really is. It works - the black goes out of his eyes and Duke returns to his body.

Duke says that Croatoan is trying to split everyone up because he knows they're too strong. In another scene, Croatoan rubs together his two fingers, causing a light to shine. Duke doubles over in pain. The black smudges escape from Dukes eyes and fly away. Duke says they have to kill him before Croatoan takes any more Troubles. Everyone says no, but Duke says he needs to choose his destiny. Another black smudge, representing a Trouble, escapes from Duke and goes back to Croatoan. Duke wants to die to prevent Croatoan from getting any more. Duke can't kill himself because he might release all his own Troubles according to the Crocker curse. Nathan suffocates Duke. As Duke dies he sees the Guard tattoo on Nathan's arm, fulfilling Vanessa's prophecy of his death.

Dwight goes to see Croatoan and says that the crystal is useless to him now. Dwight is angry that Croatoan killed Charlotte. Croatoan says he still has to trade the crystal for Lizzie. Dwight says he'll come back in a few hours with the crystal.

Audrey cries alone in her office looking at a photo of her, Nathan, and Duke. Laverne shows Audrey video footage of Nathan going to meet Croatoan. Nathan speaks to Croatoan, and Croatoan touches him, saying he needs to leave Haven so that Audrey can be where she belongs. Nathan collapses and disappears.

Audrey comes to the yellow house to confront Croatoan about Nathan. Croatoan tells her that Nathan came to him and told him he wanted to leave with the Audrey copy, and that they're now beyond the shroud surrounding Haven.

Nathan and Audrey copy find themselves in a diner - neither of them remembers how they got there, but Nathan doesn't suspect that it's the wrong Audrey.

Audrey still refuses to help Croatoan with his experiments. Croatoan starts to create an opening to the Void. He says it will take a few hours before there's enough aether. He tells Audrey to go and make her peace with what happened so she can move on.

Quotes[]

  • Gloria: Oh, he was stabbed in the chest. It looks like Duke's work all right.
Audrey: Poor Kirby. He didn't stand a chance.
Gloria: Anyway, I gotta go. Intern's watching baby Aaron and she keeps giving him apple juice. You think Croatoan's tough, try an infant on sugar high.
  • Nathan: I'm not leaving you.
Audrey: Croatoan's offer has to be little...tempting.
Nathan: You're asking me if I want all this to be over, live behind some white picket fence, adopt a shelter dog? Of course I do. But I want that with the real Audrey Parker. Not some copy.
Audrey: You wouldn't even remember that she wasn't real. How can I claim to love you as much as I do. How can I claim to love you as much as I do if I don't at least give you that chance?
Nathan: Your asking me the reason why I never, never could. Vickie's almost done with the core. We are gonna beat Croatoan, save Duke and get our lives back.
    Audrey: Yeah.
  • Duke: You'll only let me kill when it serves your purpose. Well I don't work for you anymore.
Nathan: You never worked for us.
Audrey: No, Duke's right. We used you. I used you. When we found out about the Crocker family curse, about what it could do, I used that as a tool to stop the troubles because that's what I was sent here to do. But I didn't think about how much it was going to hurt you, how killing all of those people, how...how it would change you.
Duke: It didn't change anything. This was always meant to be.
Audrey: I don't think it was. I think you were fighting your destiny and if left alone, maybe you might have even won. But I didn't know that and I came along and I sent you on that path and for that, I am truly sorry. I know how it feels Duke to be fighting to be the person that you want to be when everyone is telling you to be someone else. Croatoan thinks that I'm his daughter. I-I look like her. Do you know how easy it would be to just say, "Sure, it's good to see you dad." And stop being scared? I'm so tired. [walks up to Duke] I'm so tired of fighting my destiny. But I can't give up. Because when I look in the mirror, I only see me. I see the person that I truly am. The only person I want to be. So tell me Duke, when you look in the mirror, when no one else is around, who are you?
Duke: [touches her face and drops the knife. his eyes go back to normal.] I'm Duke Crocker and I just want to go back to being a pirate.
  • Duke: Look, I'd do it myself right? I'd go up to the roof and jump. But if I break open and bleed out all my troubles then I died for nothing. Croatoan took everything from me. I have to take something back. I have to choose my destiny. I have to show Croatoan that Duke Crocker's nobody's bitch.
  • Nathan: You are the bravest man I ever met Duke Crocker, you have always been. So much we've done together. So much we never could've done without you. I owe you so much. I will spend the rest of my life trying to repay that debt.
  • Vince: I'm sorry. What Duke has become wasn't who he was.
Audrey: No and in the end it's what saved us.
Dwight: Maybe all of Haven. It stopped Croatoan from getting his troubles.
Audrey: The aether core it's destroyed. There will be no way to build a new barn, no way to end the troubles. [looks at Nathan who looks at Duke while Dwight comforts her]
Gloria: Dwight, maybe you can just help me get him in the truck. We'll put him on ice until we can give him a proper burial at sea with Jennifer. He would like that.
    Nathan: Yeah. At sea.
  • Croatoan: When Audrey joins me, we'll live here together and we'll be a family once again. Without Charlotte of course.
    Dwight: Because you murdered her.
Croatoan: Charlotte betrayed me. She had me banished. Then she tried to poison Mara with lies. Then she killed her.
Dwight: Mara was evil. Like father, like daughter. But Charlotte--
Croatoan: Charlotte was good in the sack. Yeah, she had that going for her. You know Dwight, you're lucky that I have other concerns right now.
  • Nathan: Last time it was the carrots, so I assume you're here with a stick.

Trivia[]

  • "Now" and the series finale "Forever" both take place on the same day. In addition, the beginning of this episode picks up several hours after the events of "The Widening Gyre".
  • Duke's death along with the aftermath were the final scenes that were shot for this season and in the series.
  • The image of the cat that pops up on Audrey's computer as she looking at the photo of her, Nathan, and Duke is actually Gabrielle Stanton's real life cat, the writer of this episode.[1]
  • The final scene where Croatoan making a cloud of aetor and talks with Audrey was originally going to be the opening scene of the following episode Forever. The following episode however ran too long and this episode was short. So the scene was moved to this episode.[2]
