William "a mysterious stranger" is one of two people who helped creat The Troubles,

Early Life[]

William and Mara would come to Earth sometime prior to 1497 and would start creating the troubles. They couldn't have come any later, since Sebastian Cabot travels to Haven and spends time with the Míkmaq in 1497 and he would keep a journal in which he details the Troubles.

Charlotte Cross would find out what William and Mara were doing and would create the Barn. Where she imprionsed both Mara and William inside of it. While not specifically stated it could be said that both were locked inside the barn in 1497.

First of all, the Hunter Meteor Storm appeared in 1497. She could have been imprisoned them and Cross could have easily timed the barn to come back in 27 years. Secondly, Mara says that it has been 500 years of torture when she reappears in 2010, which is techically true, it would have been roughly 513 years. She could have easily been rounding down for her explanation. Thirdly, when Croatoan finally appears sometime around 1590, he seems to have understood what was happening to Mara, which wouldn't have happened if she had just been imprisoned.

Not known is what happens to William during this time.

In the barn[]

William In The Barn in a bar called the Oatly Tap Room

William would find Mara inside a bar called the Oatley Tap Room six months after she had come back from being Audrey Parker. At this point, the barn was dying and had reworked Mara's brain to believe she was a waitress/bartender named Lexie DeWitt and that she had been working at the bar for about a month.

Before he would interact with her, he created two men out of Aether, Sinister Man and Heavy. Its unknown how he got Aether, since it seems like Cross would have taken it from him. He came up with a plan to make Mara remember her time as Audrey Parker. It's unknown why he didn't try and convince her to be Mara again. William would approach Lexie as she was working in the bar. While William and Lexie are talking, one of the two men that William had created enters the bar and Lexie notices that he has a gun.

Lexie doesn't want to deal with the man herself, yet William appears to not really care and asks her for quarters for the jukebox. She goes to the table where the man with the gun is. He pulls the gun on Lexie and tells her to sit down. Lexie tells the man there is no money in the bar and he responds with he doesn't want any money. Before he can tell her what he does want, William comes from behind and disarms him. The man runs out of the bar. Later William tells Lexie that the man was after him because he didn't want him to tell Lexie the truth. That she isn't really Lexie at all but someone completely different.

William would approach Lexie some time later, and Lexie notices it. He tells her that she is lucky that he is so determined, in which she wasn't amused since William is carrying a concealed gun. So William breaks the gun down and puts it in front of Lexie on the bar's counter. Lexie states that she would have felt better if he had kept it intact. As they continue talking, both men that William had created approached her. William tells her that this time he may not be so lucky. No one will help William even when Lexie asks. Just when it seems like William will be taken, Audrey grabs the pieces of the gun and puts them together and then points them at the two men and tells them to let William go. They balk, and she fires, quite accurately. The two men leave without William. Lexie is very confused with her knowledge of guns, since she hadn't been trained in her lifetime. Now that William has her attention, he tells her that unless she remembers who she really is, a lot of people are going to die.

Lexie is really confused and angry, and demands that William tells her exactly what he knows.  He asks her if she remembers how she got to the bar. She describes a scene with an ex-boyfriend. William asks if she felt it? Audrey replies, "Yes". However, William, says, "You remember the feelings but you don't really feel them. Because they're not real."  Audrey talks to her friend Rhonda, another bar waitress and tells her that she's going to go home and wants to get away from William. She grabs a bottle of tequila and Rhonda states, "If this isn't real, then the boss won't mind." Lexie walks out of a back door and a few moments later, she returns through the front door of the bar. Confused, she notices that William is still there and a new batch of bar patrons. It appears to be a new day, to which Rhonda says, "Good morning, Lexie."

Lexie is now totally surprised and states to Rhonda and William both who are exactly where she left them, that she just left them a minute ago. Rhonda thinks she is joking and might be trying to get a day off. Audrey goes to William and says he really needs to tell her what is going on.

Up to this point, everyone thinks that Lexie has been pushed out of the barn. William tells her that the bar is just another name for the barn and everyone in it isn't real. He tells her the Barn is dying and if they don't hurry, it will take her with it.

William is able to convince Lexie that people are looking for her in Haven due to voices coming from Haven into the bar. On top of that, she starts to hear a fog horn which is an indicator to where the door is that will get her out of the bar and into Haven. With a bit more convincing and indicating that Audrey will need to make a "Leap of Faith", Lexie jumps through the door upon seeing Nathan and her friends on the other side from the Haven door.

Its assumed that William is able to get out of the barn on his own, though it is never mentioned how he was.

In Haven[]

William talking to Audrey in Haven

William has the two men he created tie him up so he could make Mara, now going by Audrey, still believe he was a good guy. Audrey would find him, and release him and take him to the police station.

William would release a bunch of Aether into the police station, causing hallucinations in most of the police staff and Nathan, Jennifer, and Dwight. The police station is turned into a mad house with everyone turning on each other until Audrey mistakenly figures out where the box that the thugs want is. After she figures it out, William tells Audrey that he had caused the hallucinations and was the boss of the two thugs. William causes Audrey to remember her original self by touching her causing a great "spark".

William started targeting people, and either changed their trouble, or started giving people troubles in order to cause chaos and bring Mara back.

In a attempt to reactivate Mara, he would target the Harkers. The Harker's trouble was that once they reached the age of thirteen, their cries would become lethal to the one's around them. William and Mara had originally picked that age, since children younger would accidentally kill a lot of people since they couldn't understand the now crying rule. William would find one of the kids, and changed his trouble so it would activate while he was still a newborn. He says that Audrey could create a Trouble to "silence" a Harker baby that cries. The plan would kind of fail because Audrey couldn't come up with the proper Trouble and she would reactivate the Crocker curse, so Duke could kill the boys father and wipe out the trouble from his family. Audrey does remember Mara while she is reactivating the curse.

In The Lighthouse, Audrey tried to push him into the Door, which brought him back to where he came from, but he grabbed her arm and his spark caused Audrey to be taken over by Mara. Nathan pushed William and Jennifer closing the door, resulting in him being stuck in The Void.

The Void[]

In Close to Home, William is seen still alive in the void and setting traps. In one of his traps, he catches Nathan, who had entered the void to find the controller of The Barn.

In A Matter of Time, William becomes trapped under a rock and unable to help Nathan remove a rock blocking the entrance of the cave. William, noticing that Nathan was growing weaker and near death, demanded that Nathan give him some Aether spilling from the cracked rock surface; his alleged plan was to give Nathan a new trouble to help remove the rock. However, although Nathan gave William the Aether instead he made one of his minions to remove the rock and release him. Although, being told that Mara was now deceased and that she was only after his Aether, he realized that he always loved her more than she loved him. Nathan gave his ring to allow William to return home.

Trivia[]

  • William as a character and his role of helping to create the troubles wasn't developed until the early writing stages of Season 4, which was in January of 2013. Though the writers since the start of the show always envisioned it being multiple people who created the troubles but the specifics of who those characters would be were not set in stone until season 4.[1]
